A little planning goes a long way
How It Works
Measure your floor
Enter the length and width of a rectangular room in feet or meters.
Check your flooring box
Enter coverage per box, your waste allowance, and the price of one box.
Plan your purchase
We add waste, round up to full boxes, and multiply by your box price.
Formula
- Floor Area
- Room length × room width
- Required Area With Waste
- Floor area × (1 + waste ÷ 100)
- Boxes Needed
- Round up (required area ÷ coverage per box)
- Estimated Cost
- Boxes needed × price per box
Example Calculation
A 14 × 12 ft room, 10% waste, and flooring covering 23.8 sq ft per box at $50 per box.
- 14 × 12 = 168 sq ft of floor.
- 168 × 1.10 = 184.8 sq ft with waste.
- Round the area-with-waste estimate up to 8 full boxes.
- 8 × $50 = $400.00 in flooring.
Buy 8 boxes. The flooring estimate is $400.00 before tax and installation supplies.
FAQ
How much waste should I allow?
The editable default is 10%. Cuts, layout, and patterns affect waste; use the allowance recommended for your product and installation.
Does switching units change the number of boxes?
No. We convert room dimensions and coverage together. The same physical box keeps the same price in USD.
Can I estimate an irregular room?
Split it into rectangles and estimate each section separately. Rounding each section can produce more spare boxes than a combined order.
What does the cost include?
Full boxes of flooring only. Underlayment, transitions, tools, adhesive, labor, delivery, and tax are excluded.
